Nice piece! Most of us are taught to deny and reject this aspect of our humanity in relationship to personal narratives and narratives of American exceptionalism. Most of the time we ignore the challenges that remind us of our everyday vulnerability, especially when we have the material possessions, like a car and a house filled with many personal items, brand-named clothing and devices that give us a sense of mobility and social status. However, just the slightest change to our social and economic circumstances, or the disabling of some of those possessions has the power to make us realize that we are not that exceptional, nor are we in ultimate control of everything that happens in our lives or around us. And, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves, we are NOT in control of the people that we know, even our closest friends and acquaintances. At any given moment these folks can do or say anything to shock us and to catch us unaware; they are free to be who they are. At any time, our lives can change and we will be forced to change or do things differently and go about life – the ride ahead – from a different point of view.
