“Nice pub for a city centre!” 3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2014 NEW Popped by today for a quick bite after hearing some fantastic things about the place. Unfortunately three days of festival chain smoking had rendered my throat completely impractical for the volcano burger which i really fancied the sound of, thus the only other choice was to go for the blue cheese and walnut burger instead. The staff were really nice, laid back and happily engaged us with recommendations and general q&a about the food. Food took about 10-15mins to come out so we werent left waiting. The burgers really are worth it size wise, big plates nicely dressed with seeded buns a small refreshing side salad and great pomme frites. The burger itself was unfortunately a bit wide of the mark, the patty was far too smoked to be used within the flavour profile of the blue cheese and walnuts, as though individually they were lovely, together the taste ended up conflated. The burgers salad consisted of a pickle and gherkin matched with a green leaf salad. Although it is undoubtedly more morning prep i think a more carefully matched burger salad would really polish the dish. The pickle, smoked beef and blue cheese just didnt work as it should of done and the pizza burger my friend had suffered from the same issue, though his smoked patty and rustic tomato passata were a huge success. A little more care with the finer details of the overall flavour portfolios on offer would make a huge difference, my suggestion would be to pickle the walnuts with the blue cheese burgers...but take that advice however you want. Overall the food in general was smashing and i can absolutely understand why the rockstone enjoys such high praise and cracking reviews. Visited July 2014
