Nice rebuttal to a piece that I see making the rounds again about music critics and their readers. As impressed and appreciative as I can be when I read a musicians technical take on a song and why it works or doesnt from a theory perspective, I also know it would bore the majority of my readers to tears and theyd stop reading. Working with just enough of what is commonly understood about music in technical language (one still has to call a thing a thing) and a great deal of literary license with metaphors, my job is to help the lay person understand whats going on with the music and who made the music possible, what they can expect from buying it, where it fits in genre and tradition (or doesnt), and whether or not I think it has artistic and/or commercial value and how I arrived at that opinion. Not whether I thought a bar wouldve worked better had the artist played an 8th note, instead of a 16th.
