Nice to read: Most people in church world have heard the story of David and Bathsheba. I just read this story in my One Year Bible (II Samuel 11-12) and observed the BIG MISTAKES David made. This theme of David’s compounding mistakes began to weave itself through the chapter. Here are some of the mistakes that jumped out at me as I reflected on this famous story of King David… MISTAKE #1: DON’T DO WHAT YOU KNOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. David blew off his kingly responsibility of leading his troops out to war. He made the hand off to Joab to do his job. “At the time that kings go off to war, David sent Joab… and David remained in Jerusalem.” (II Sam. 11:1) David was a warrior, but the warrior wanted the Lazy-Boy. He was clear about his role, he just didn’t care anymore. Something was very off in his heart. What was INSIDE him came to expression at a critical crossroad. What is inside us will eventually come to expression too. In the world of David’s heart, he lost intimacy with God. He had hardened his heart. He was no longer sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. The sweet psalmist had gone sour. MISTAKE #2: INDULGE YOUR EVERY DESIRE. David saw THE woman from his penthouse. He wanted the woman more than he wanted to be right with God. At this point, he was done. Fantasy world took over. King David was out of his mind lusting for Mrs Israel, Bathsheba. He had no idea this would be a defining moment in his life. If he could have just pushed the PAUSE BUTTON for a moment… and thought about the implications, the carnage, the pain, the complications of his impending choice. (II Samuel 11:2) MISTAKE #3: IGNORE PERSONAL WARNINGS. David was warned that the woman was “the wife of Uriah” but it did not matter. He made up his mind. He was consumed with his passion. (II Samuel 11:3) MISTAKE #4: CHOOSE NOT TO KILL SIN SO IT WILL KILL YOU OR OTHERS. David arranged to have Uriah killed. Imagine how he sat alone in the palace thinking how to cover his sin… devising plans A, then plan B, and ultimately plan C to murder Uriah. David even invited him over for drinks to get Uriah drunk so he would follow David’s cover up plan. (II Samuel 11:4-15) MISTAKE #5: CHOOSE TO COVER UP RATHER THAN CONFESS. David choose to keep investing in covering his sin and it kept getting him deeper and deeper into trouble. GOD HAS HIS WAYS TO CRASH THROUGH OUR DECEPTION. (II Sam. 12:1) “The Lord sent Nathan to David.” God sent just the right person to punch David in the mouth with the truth. EVERYBODY NEED A NATHAN! God has His Nathan’s today… who is your Nathan that the Lord can touch on the shoulder and send into your life? - Copied from an article
