Nick Clegg needs to stop claiming to support democracy if he is not willing to hold a referendum on the European Union. It has been almost forty years since the first and last referendum. And it’s fine for Clegg to embrace the European Union, but only on the condition that he doesn’t claim to be an advocate of democracy or an opponent of dictatorship and authoritarianism. The most troubling thing about the whole conversation is the underlying indifference towards democracy that can be seen from the very people who claim to be the most democratic. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”. We should always fear those who want to take away our rights because they think themselves wiser.
