Nico wrote this song about her lover Jim Morrison and how she left him an answering message which he was not able to reply to due to his death. The End... [1974] is the last in her incredible trilogy of haunting records, beginning with 1969s The Marble Index – an album of frozen, almost otherworldly desolation that stands, I believe, as her greatest work – followed by 1970s more medieval Desertshore and closed off by The End..., an album that maintains this tracks tone of bleak despair throughout, prompting Dean of American Rock Critics Robert Christgau to write in his unflattering review, Nico is what happens when the bloodless wager their minds on the wisdom of the blood and the suicidal make something of their lives. The album features contributions from John Cale and Brian Eno and also contains a cover of The Doors The End.
