Nicolls Fire Update Location: Kiavah Wilderness, Southeast of Onyx Acres Burned: 1,178 Structures Threatened: 0 Containment: 5% Structures Destroyed: 0 Fire Started: July 11, 2014 Injuries: 0 Cause: Under Investigation Total personnel assigned to the Fire: 673 Summary The Nicolls Fire started July 11, 2014 in the Scodie Mountains, within the boundaries of the Kiavah Wilderness Area on the Sequioa National Forest. The fire is being managed by David Cooper’s South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team, who took command of the fire at 6:00 pm yesterday evening. The area of the fire has not burned since the Jacks Fire of 1997 and is mainly pinion-juniper and brush with some grass. Crews will continue to be flown in by helicopter into the fire due to steep rocky terrain and limited access. The fire activity continued into the night and air resources will begin dropping water and retardant this morning to slow the rate of spread. Heavy use of air resources will continue throughout the week supporting crews on the ground. Camp 9 Recreational Area Campground is closed to the public to house the Incident Command Post. Evacuations: None Closures ORDER NO. 14-3. Pursuant to 16 USC 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 a & b, and to provide for public safety, forest roads and trails in the Nicolls Fire area have been closed and will remain in effect until the fire has been fully suppressed.
