Nicos Poulantzas : We have to break one and for all with a mechanistic and almost topological (if not geographical) conception of the relation between internal and external fators. In the present phase of imperialism there is really no such a thing as external factors on the one hand, acting purely from outside, and opposed to internal factors isolated in their own space and outclassing the others. If we maintain the primacy of internal factors we simply mean that those coordinates of the imperialist chane that are external to a country - the global balance of forces, the role of a particular great power, etc - only act in the country in question by way of their internalization, i.e. by their articulation to its own specific contradictions. But these contradictions themselves, in certain aspects, represent the induced reproduction of the contradictions of the imperialist chain within the various individual countries The Crisis of the Dictatorships, p. 21.
