Niger State Government Partners Prison Service to Train Inmates in Skills Acquisition -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Niger State Ministry of Education is to collaborate with Nigerian Prison Service on the training of inmates in skills acquisition and in non-formal education. The Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Danladi Umar Abdulhamid stated this when he led the top management of the ministry on a working visit to the old and Medium Security Prison all in Minna. Alhaji Danladi Umar Abdulhamid said the present administration was passionate about education being made easy, affordable and accessible to all Nigerlites irrespective where they were. The Commissioner stated that the ministry would work with the prison officials to give opportunity to inmates to acquire quality education within the prison environment. “Whoever comes to Niger State is a Nigerlite. Therefore, even the prisoners and inmates have the right to be educated. It is better to be killed educated than to be killed an illiterate. Therefore, they should look at this as an opportunity for them to learn one or two things. If you come here as an illiterate and you go out as an educated person, I think it would be better for the society. Some of them are here because of ignorance. So, I feel the Ministry of Education has a lot to partner with the prisons”. “So, by the grace of God we are going to look at their literacy education sector, sport sector, we are going to look at areas where we would collaborate especially in the area of trade”, the commissioner further stated. According to him, the ministry would evolve strategy that would make education a priority not only for the government but for the parents for the purpose of enhanced development. The Commissioner appreciated the Prison Officials for their commitment to the transformation of the inmates particularly in the area of skills acquisition.
