Nigeria: Kurt Arrives Flight over here was was kind of shitty, which was what I expected. I forgot what a crappy airline United is; I only took the flight because it was direct. I should have just toughed it out on British Airways; I would have had to connect at Heathrow (London) but BA gives you free drinks, could have gotten some shuteye while waiting for my connection (see below), I could have had fish&chips with some good English beer at the Five Tuns pub in terminal 5, and in any case the food aint super-duper on BA but its orders of magnitude better than UA. Also, you cant hardly get the flight attendants on UA to bring you one of their $7.00 beers, $10.00 wines, or $8.00 liquor drinks...never did get my gin&tonic. And the brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a dream alright, a nightmare. I was like the only white face on that plane! Everybody was Nigerian, which is cool because all the Nigerians I have ever met are pretty friendly people. The only problem was my aisle seat; for some reason, Nigerians seem to go to the bathroom a lot. Therefore, I didnt get a hell of a lot of sleep on the 11 hour flight. Anyway, my Lagos airport experience was a lot different than going into Luanda, Angola. Recall that the Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport seemed to be about the size of Midland-Odessa airport. Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport is a big one; while not as big as Houston Intergalactic, its still pretty good size. I had a travel agent to meet me there: had my picture and walked up to me. Ran my passport and visa through immigrations and customs without me having to do anything; took a while to get my luggage but Clement found my driver and I ended up at the Hotel Marcopolo. So no engagement with corrupt and arrogant government officials, oh happy day! Lagos is hot & humid- think Miami, FL in August. Or New Orleans. But the section Im in (Lekki) is quite nice, it is international businesses (banks, construction, oil&gas) and tourism. The hotel isnt too bad. It is quite a bit different in concept than The Avalade in Angola. The room is comfortable and clean, they have not tried to make it look real classy or anything, but Ive got everything I need. Of course, the electricity has gone out about 6 times since Ive been here, but thats Africa. Havent tried the local beer or cuisine yet. I brought a half-pint of Jack in my checked bag and Im kind of abusing that right now. I dont have any pictures for yall yet, but stay tuned! Uncle Kurt- peace out, yall.
