Nigeria W 4-2 Ivory Coast W: Oparanozies brace fires Falcons to victory Edwin Okons ladies began their 2014 African Women Championship on a brilliant note as they breezed past Clementine Toures ladies on Saturday evening. Nigeria women national team defeated Cote dIvoire 4-2 in their opening game of the 9th African Women Championship played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday evening. A brace from Desire Oparanozie inspired Edwin Okons ladies to a comfortable win as they begin their quest for their seventh title as well as seek a place in the 2015 Fifa Womens World Cup billed for Canada. Nigeria’s promising displays got them their first goal in the 12th minutes through Esther Sunday. She got a well tailored pass from Ngozi Okobi before slotting the ball past Ange Marie Thiamale for the curtain raiser. Les Elephantes bounced back to reckoning with a 21st minute equalizer through Fatou Coulibaly via the penalty spot after Rebecca Elloh was brought down aggressively by Onome Ebi – a challenge that got her a caution. Fatou made not mistake in converting the kick as she sent goalkeeper Precious Dede the wrong way. The enterprising Nigerian ladies were a beauty to watch as they combined beautiful football artistry with well-organise play but were unlucky not to have score more goals before the half time break. On resumption of the second half, the former African queen doubled their lead through an unlikely source with defender Mariam Diakite scoring an own goal to the dismay of her teammates. Oparanozie made it 3-1 on 74 minutes for Nigeria by connecting home from Sunday’s pass from the left for a two-goal lead. Clementine Toure’s ladies pulled one back after restarting play and Christine Lohoues Yeble profited from a loose ball before firing a shot which greased off Ebi into the net. With less than three minutes to the end of the game, Oparanozie completed her brace with a fine finish off a cross from Asishat Oshoala pass from the right. Nigeria’s next game is against Zambia on Tuesday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium , Windhoek. The debutants lost 2-0 to hosts Namibia in their opening game courtesy of first half strikes from Rita Williams and Thomalina Adams.
