Nigeria, it seems, does not pass for a Nation. The new devil is religion. And, perplexingly, the Church in Nigeria with her materialistic pentecostalism cannot- and should not- be relied upon to administer the essential dosage of morality on the society. Not only the church, Islam too, again sadly, has become the wellspring of terrorists and jihadists. While these religions do not fundamentally approve terrorism, their adherents have- and continue to- wrought indescribable damage with these faiths. And, I hold that, materialistic pentecostalism- the one currently adored by churches in Nigeria and that emphasizes legendary material acquisition more than morality which is the bedrock of intellectualism- is also terrorism, or at least, breeds dangerous jealousy and competition in a society which then fosters or strengthens the creation of class. Clearly, such will put a distinct line between the haves and have-nots, in readiness for an uprising. So, like Prof Wole Soyinka, I agree that the true faithfuls of these religions and others must take back their religion from these terrorists, and salvage its remains.
