Nigerian Village Makes President and Mrs. Carter “Chiefs” #ThrowbackThursday to March 22, 1995 - President and Mrs. Carter are made honorary chiefs in Amorie village of Enugu state, Nigeria. At the time, Enugu state alone had over 10,000 cases of Guinea worm disease. Since then, with assistance from The Carter Center, Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria has made tremendous progress in its fight against neglected tropical diseases. Formerly the world’s most Guinea worm-endemic country, Nigeria hasn’t reported an indigenous case of the water-borne parasite since 2008 and is working with the Center to protect Nigerians from six other diseases.
