Nigeria’s Unity Under Severe Pressure – Tambuwa Nigeria’s Unity Under Severe Pressure – Tambuwal The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said that the unity of Nigeria has been put under severe pressure as a result of the poor state of security in the country. Tambuwal, who made this comment at the 2013 anniversary of John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC, yesterday, said that the devastating impact that the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria already had on several aspects of the nation’s life could not be under-estimated. He said that the standard of living of the people in some parts of Nigeria has fallen below pre-independence levels, and noted that the economy and lifestyle of the North Eastern states had been destroyed. He also berated the way insecurity had crippled the educational standard of the children living in the worst-hit areas. Reading from his speech entitled: “Domestic Security Challenges and Nigeria’s Future,” the Speaker said though the focus of the seminar was on the implication of Nigeria’s current domestic insecurity to the country’s future, it was important to note that the security situation was already wreaking havoc on the lives and livelihoods of the Nigerian people. “It is perhaps not a coincidence that those parts of Nigeria that have borne the brunt of the violence caused by extremism and militancy, the Niger Delta, the North East, Plateau, are also areas where the people suffer economic hardships. These are places where extreme poverty, harsh environmental conditions and illiteracy have conspired to keep the people at the lowest rung of the development ladder. “There is tendency to look at causes as effects when we seek solutions to dire situations, but we must resist the intellectual laziness that seizes on easy explanations and avoids asking hard questions. We must ask the question whether the current domestic insecurity is the cause of the Nigeria’s problems or a tragic consequence of Nigeria’s peculiar history and historical evolution.” Speaking further, he said that a great deal of effort was being made to resolve the crisis, and that is was only proper that all Nigerians, both home and in the Diaspora, as well as the international community, continue to support the Nigerian government in meeting the security challenges Leadership
