Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Azubuike - TopicsExpress

Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Azubuike Ihejirika (Nwanne Ukwu Anyi), has condemned calls by Northern Elders for his prosecution at the International Criminal Court, Hague, saying the call is ill-conceived and made out of ignorance. After a church service at the Presidential Villa Chapel in Abuja on Sunday, Ihejirika said that the elders, if they really were elders, should thank the service chiefs, his officers and himself for offering huge sacrifices to the nation. He said that what the services did was first to see that the country was safe with the north in particular since they were the first beneficiaries of the sacrifices made. “There is no senatorial zone in this country that has not lost a personnel of the armed forces which makes it unfortunate that the same elders, if they are really elders, have not cared to send a single condolence message to the military but to make such a call,”[/ he said. The former Chief of Army Staff said that their statement was also “discouraging and impacting negatively on the counter-terrorist efforts, as there were soldiers that have not had meal since yesterday because of the peculiarity of where they are at the moment”.[/ Lt General Ihejirika, however, assured Nigerians that they would be very happy soon, as a lot of structures had been put in place. “With the equipment and training that were carried out in recent days, there will be little or no hiding place for the insurgents,” he said. MY COMMENTS: I LISTENED TO LT-GEN IHEJIRIKA ON CHANNELS TV. HE SOUNDED TO ME AS A VERY INTELLIGENT, HUMANE AND THOROUGHBRED PROFESSIONAL. HE PICKED HIS WORDS CAREFULLY, BUT YOU CAN TELL HE WAS HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE PEOPLE HE HAS WORKED SO HARD TO PREVENT THE BOKO HARAM INSURGENTS FROM TURNING THEIR AREA TO A WASTELAND DID NOT APPRECIATE WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THEM. HOW SAD!
