Night #3-after Hurricane Odile (from my journal): Out of control - Night of FEAR!! Word spread that there were looters/bandits and rapists/murders that had escaped, in the area, breaking into homes, even with people home. As we were organizing as a community and being briefed to build fires and block off the streets, we could hear whistles being blown and people screaming down the hill. There was no power and no ability to call anyone for help. There was no moon. The night was black. As we stood there, listening, you could see huge bonfires being built to protect life and property. We took turns patrolling the area and keeping fires lit. At about 2AM, I went back to the apartment. I had our neighbor stay with us, because the windows in her apartment were blown out from the hurricane. She slept on the couch, and Jonathan and I were both sleeping with knives! This is the first time ever, I wanted a gun for protection!! I was awakened at 4.10AM, dogs barking and gunshots in the distance (down the hill). I did not sleep after that. As dawn arrived, the smell of smoke was thick in the air, and there was so much smoke from all the fires, it was thick, like a dense fog. When I opened the door, I couldnt see the horizon. This was the beginning of 4 nights of patrolling, building fires, and being afraid...no power, no ability to call anyone for help, only candles, whistles, each other, and keeping a weapon for protection.
