Night landing facility in all NE airports by 2014 NEW DELHI : Night landing facilities would be functional by the end of the current financial year in all the 11 operating airports in the northeastern States. The Civil Aviation Ministry has already drawn out a programme, according to which, by end of the financial year 2013–14, all these northeastern airports are going to be equipped with instrument–related night–landing facility. Till date most of the airports in the region are having certain problems with regard to night landing facilities. “Although all the ground base and visual facilities were already in place, some instrument landing facilities are required to be provided in some States,” said a top official of the Civil Aviation Ministry. The initiative taken by the Ministry to equip all the airports with night landing facility assumes significance as all the airports in the northeastern region are making losses. The total loss suffered by these airports in one year was about Rs 110 crore. Airlines are also operating under loss in the northeastern States. The Civil Aviation Secretary, KN Srivastava, said that the coverage in the northeastern States is very poor and the airlines are not able to increase it on account of the cost factor.
