Nightcrawler - This is a very slick and stylish, noir type of film. It has a lot to say about modern journalism, and about what the public want to see from their news outlets. It is directed with great confidence and the performances from the 4 leads are outstandingly good. The film doesnt try to sugarcoat the sad truth of life (which I cant say much about without spoiling bits of the film) Its a rare example of a film that you actually would be happy to sit through a bit more of because you want to know even more about the characters, which is testament to both the writing and performances. The film has some amusing moments but also has the ability to rack up the tension when it needs too, this is in part thanks to Gyllenhaals performance; his charter is so unstable, you just never know what hes thinking or planning.
