Nii Lante scolds Gov’t Detractors …As He Inaugurates A-5-Member C’ttee For Model Markets Story: Witty K. Adusu The Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio Constituency, in Accra, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpujye has expressed disappointment and condemned the people who master-minded the move by market women to request construction of the burnt market themselves. As the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, he explained that constructions of such social amenities are solely the responsibility of governments, and not market women. Also, he said those behind the market burning should rather teach these market women maintenance culture in order to be responsible and to maintain the markets for it to be free from things that could cause these poor women monies and properties. Instead of telling them things for cheap political points, he added. As an MP for Odododiodio Constituency, he said some of the burnt markets were in his constituency, so the women come to him for help; and this disturbs him a lot because it is not fault of theirs; but unscrupulous persons in the society. In a bid to build a modern market across the country, the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpujye, has inaugurated a-5-Member Technical Committee, in Accra on development to ensure the government’s move to construct this model markets comes through. The Committee Members are Mr. Kwadwo Ntim Atuahene, Director at the Trade Ministry’s Division, as Chairman, Mr. Augustine Otoo Director Investor Services - GIPC, Mr. Ekow Coleman Senior Officer, Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Mr. Patrick Affum Asumandu and Nana Akrase Sarpon as members. Inaugurating the Technical Committee, the Hon. Deputy Minister told the Committee that it was vision of the Mahama led government to give Ghanaians a market that has facilities to meet certain standard so as to curtail potential fire outbreaks. In light of this, he charged them to expedite work given them to meet the time frame and to ensure the markets could stand the test of time. He humbly requested the committee members to get some females as co-opted members to also contribute their quota as far as constructing market is concern. These model markets are supposed to be constructed across the Regional Capitals, District Capitals and Major Towns in the country. According to Deputy Minister, the architectural drawing is ready on the drawing board. And this construction of the markets would be carried out by Public-Private Partnership (PPP); an arrangement between the public and private sectors under the private sector resources to provide the infrastructure and the services to be provided by the public sector. Nii Lante disclosed to the ceremony that some banks expressed interest and proposed to form consortium if chance is given them to construct these markets across the country. Also, he expressed disappointment and condemned people who master-minded the move by market women to request construction of the market themselves. Nii Okumka Lante said it is the responsibility of the government to construct market, and not market women.
