Nijmegen was on the right side of the Allied advance into Holland - TopicsExpress

Nijmegen was on the right side of the Allied advance into Holland which came to a halt in Arnhem late in 1944. Johan and his family were liberated by Canadian Soldiers. He still remembers them handing out gifts of chocolate and sweets to the starving Dutch children. He remembers that one of these gifts, peanut butter, was shared with the family cat, which had somehow survived the war on the few precious left-overs the family kept from their meagre meals. The sudden intake of such rich food proved to much for the unfortunate cat. It had survived the bombing, but the Canadian peanut butter carried it off. Cats have always been precious companions to Johan. He treats them with loving-kindness; better than some people treat their children. - Michael Kirby.
