Nikon D4S test shoot: Until I get my own, Nikon Norway was kind - TopicsExpress

Nikon D4S test shoot: Until I get my own, Nikon Norway was kind enough to lend me a D4S for my Svalbard adventure starting on Tuesday. Just to make sure I got the settings right I went out in horrible conditions today to do some autofocus testing. I was particularly keen to learn more about the new Group AF mode. At my local wetland I quickly shot 250 pictures in a few minutes, most of them against high contrast backgrounds and with constant rain. It was a dark and rainy day and I was shooting at 5000 ISO, only using the Group AF mode. Lock-on was set at Normal, other then that I did no changes to the settings. Out of the 250 images only 13 was completely out of focus (my bad...). Some were near misses with sharpness on a wing or the chest as the bird shifted direction, but most of them were smack on! I have added one picture for you to see the conditions I was shooting at, bearing in mind the background shifted from dark trees, grass and rock walls to bright white sky in the same sequence. I used the 300mm f/2,8 lens at f/5,6 and 1/2000sec. The image was developed in Capture NX-D (beta version). No noise reduction added!
