Nikon Metrology and KU Leuven offer a unique PhD opportunity working at the forefront of Computed Tomography technology within a world leading company. The student will primarily be based in the UK working alongside Nikon Metrology’s top engineers and researchers for the duration of their studentship. The Early Stage Researcher (PhD) position is fully funded for 3 years by Marie Curie Actions – Initial Training. The contract of employment is for a fixed term of 3 years from commencement. Annual salary circa £40k plus single person/family mobility allowance circa £700 - £1,500 per month. This project will predominantly focus on the quantification and correction (reduction) of multi-material beam hardening artefacts in reconstructed Computed Tomography (CT) volumes. The successful candidate will be predominantly based in Tring, UK where Nikon Metrology (X-Tek Systems Ltd) design and manufacture X-ray and CT inspection systems. The PhD for which the candidate studies will be administered by the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium, with whom close collaboration will occur throughout the course of the project. During the three years candidate will undertake secondments at both KULeuven and RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Candidates should have a master’s degree or equivalent in Maths, Physics or a related discipline. The suitable candidates will demonstrate a strong mathematical background. As the role will involve the development of algorithms and associated software some programming knowledge would be an advantage but candidates prepared to develop such skills will also be considered. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required as the candidate will be interacting with the Engineering staff within the company. Their thesis will also be written in English. The PhD is funded, and the fellow will work within the framework of, the Marie Curie Actions Initial Training Network (interaqct.eu). This aims to foster trans-national mobility and improve early-stage researchers’ career perspectives in the public and private sectors. As such the successful candidate must be within the first 4 years of their research career (full time equivalent). The suitable candidate will start as soon as possible.
