Nine hours of sleep last night. This is something of a rare event for me, as troubled sleep is a part of my psyche. A doctor once told me that I might be suffering from an over-active imagination, noting that “I suppose it comes with your professional territory”. And she also gave me the following bit of essential clinical advice: “The next time you wake up at three am, plagued by life, do remember this: the middle of the night is always the most dark moment psychologically not simply because it is dark outside, but also because your blood sugar is at such a low level. So my counsel to you is a simple one: have a few pieces of chocolate. It will raise your blood sugar and, in turn, make the world not seem so oppressive or impossible. For a moment or two anyway”. And this is the reason why, when traveling, I always pack three essential items: a small computer on which to write, a small bottle of good whisky, and several bars of excellent chocolate. We all have our ways of making it through the night.
