Ninety MIC division chiefs unanimously agreed that the central working committee (CWC) for 2009-2013 be chosen to manage MIC in the interim period while waiting for a new CWC to be elected. The decision was made at a closed-door meeting which lasted more than four hours with MIC deputy president Dr S Subramaniam, vice-president M Saravanan and several other party leaders at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last night. Subramaniam said the meeting also decided that those who won uncontested in the party elections in Malacca in 2013 including the president, deputy president, Wanita chief and Youth chief continued to serve in the CWC. According to the legal system and practice made in such situations in the past, the CWC can manage the party for the time being, that is the CWC of 2013 in the present case. And those who won uncontested, there will be no issue of them being in the temporary CWC, he told reporters after the meeting. MIC has 135 divisions throughout the country. Dr Subramaniam, who is also health minister, said a special committee involving representatives from each state would be set up to obtain their views as well as to deal with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to resolve the party crisis. He said the committee would be set up in the next one or two days, with the participation of 20 to 25 members from all over the country. We will share with the party president on the decisions today, he added. Palanivel not at meeting Asked if a proposal for a vote of no-confidence against the president was raised by division heads present today, Dr Subramaniam said he did not allow the matter to be debated as it was not the objective of the meeting. He said the meeting was held at the behest of the division heads, especially in Selangor, who were asking the top leadership to explain the problems faced by MIC at the moment. Asked why the party president was not present to give the explanation, Dr Subramaniam said Palanivel (right) was aware of the meeting as he himself (Dr Subramaniam) had hoped the number one party leader would attend the meeting. Last Dec 5, ROS ordered MIC to hold re-elections for the three vice-president posts and 23 CWC seats in 90 days after finding irregularities in the party elections at the MIC annual general assembly in Malacca on Nov 30, 2013.
