Ninth Best Movie Villain of 2014: David Anderson Collins (The Guest) Sometimes, the best villains dont start off as such in the eyes of the audience. They can be polite, charming, and even provide helpful advice to the protagonists from time to time. And for a better part of this movie, David Anderson Collins starts of as such: looking after the family of a dead war veteran after he made a promise to do so. He helps the younger brother against the bullies that plague him, provides relief and advice to the parents, and even protects the younger daughter and her friend during a party that goes awry. But much as the scene below suggests, there is a capacity for cold-blooded violence that festers within Collins: only manifesting himself when his true identity or those around him are threatened. When these scenarios happen, we slowly realize the true nature of the psychopathic Collins: a self-destructive killer for whom attachments are impossible since he will ultimately drag them down with him into illegal activities or even death. As Devils go, Collins is one of the best of the year because of this: reeling you in with the bait of his charm and even treating you well before he takes off his mask of pleasantry and drags you straight to Hell.
