Chinar saplings were planted along with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan Director Ms. Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman and President of Women’s Political Watch Ms. Veena Nayyar at the famous Hazratbal Dargah area opening to Dar-Es-Salam (Abode of Peace). The solemn event was endorsed by local population and community workers. Nirbhoy Didi Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, who is known for her remarkable peace initiatives, conceived and spearheaded the campaign called “One Million Tree of Peace Campaign.” Under this initiative, the Nirbhoy Gram volunteers are hoping to plant trees in conflict affected villages in the borders of Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, China and Pakistan. The initiative in Kashmir is a symbolic presentation of peace as an object of priority. “We hope to take this forward in years to come as part of our advocacy for safety, security, protection and justice,” said Nirbhoy Gram National Coordinator Tarun Monga. Nirbhoy Didi will be camping in Kashmir for two days and visit women, children and orphanages. Under this initiative, it is expected that people participation will lead to a peaceful and happy world. Said Nirbhoy Didi, “Plant a tree of love in your heart; promise to raise a tree of life; and gift a tree of peace to your family, community, society, the nation and the world.”
