No 2014 Miss Universe? Will there be a Miss Universe 2014? That question hangs in the air as the third quarter of 2014 rolls in and there is no announcement of the holding of most prestigious pageant to crown the 2014 Miss Universe. Recently, the plot thickened with a Twitter announcement that the Miss Universe pageant will be held at the Trump National Doral Miami on Jan. 18, 2015. The “twit,” made by Doral Mayor Luigi Boria, came following months of speculation on the venue and date for the Miss Universe contest. His news came ahead of the official announcement of the Miss Universe Organization that has been scheduled in a press conference on Sept. 16, NBC 6 Florida news said. NO 2014 MISS UNIVERSE? But here’s the big question – will that Miss Universe contest scheduled on January 18, 2015 be for title year 2014 or 2015? Or will the organizers skip the 2014 title? If the pageant in January will be for the 2015 title, then it will be the first time that there will be no Miss Universe show in a single year since the beauty contest started in 1952. It will also mark the longest reign of a Miss Universe titleholder. Miss Universe 2013 is Gabriela Isler of Venezuela, whose term will be extended for two more months. The Miss Universe 2013 pageant was held in Russia in November, 2013. TWO MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANTS? However, there may be two Miss Universe pageants next year – in January and in December, so says unconfirmed reports. If this will push through, that will be another first for the beauty contest. Meanwhile, beauty pageant netizens took to social media to express disappointment on the news issued by Boria. Pageant fans from around the world said they could not believe that there will be no Miss Universe contest this year, deemed as the most highly- anticipated beauty contest, because they waited long for the show. BB. PILIPINAS The Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest, which sends Philippine delegates to the Miss Universe contest annually, refused to comment on the issue, saying that they will wait for the official announcement from the Miss Universe Organization led by Donald Trump. The Philippines’ official bet to the 2014 Miss Universe contest is Mary Jean Lastimosa who, sources said, is expected to leave for the pageant in Miami, Florida after Christmas. “This strongly confirms reports that the beauty pageant will actually be held in January next year,”’ observers added. TWO ‘MISS UNIVERSE’ So far, the country has produced two Miss Universe – Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1973). The beauty pageant has been held in the Philippines twice – 1974 and 1994. Since 2010, the Philippines has consistently maintained a respectable Top 5 finish in the pageant – Maria Venus Raj (4th runner-up, 2010), Shamcey Supsup (3rd runner-up, 2011), Janine Tugonon (1st runner-up, 2012), and Ariella Arida (3rd runner-up, 2013).
