No DC High School in the 90s and 00s looked anything like the school below. Even Wilson, up in NW, looked nothing like the suburban schools the kids and I would see every weekend for chess tournaments, from below Richmond to above Baltimore and all the way out to Luray. Compared to the suburban schools, the DC schools -- and the old inner city rec centers -- stated to everyone who walked in: You dont matter. The new Dunbar High School definitely says, This is what this city thinks of you in an entirely different way. I hope the kids get it. And I hope this building reflects a whole different way of thinking in DC about its youth.
