No I never knew the word “No” would turn my world upside down. Never knew it would start a domino effect of destruction in my life. In a family of narcissists, “No” results in injurious aftermaths that wreak havoc on the soul. I never knew saying “No” would lead to being ostracized on the surface, while slandered behind the scenes. Friends would suddenly turn to enemies without warning or explanation. Family would turn their backs. Never knew a simple “No” would cause an abyss of silence meant to chastise. Never knew how much I’d be forced to give up simply for saying a word meant to protect myself. I never knew the word “No” would lead me to grieving the death of a relationship that never was. Bringing about an anguish so intense it felt the heart was literally being ripped from the chest. Bringing about an anger in the aftermath of a sinful injustice that would never be punishable. In a family of narcissists, “No” is a poison meant to destroy the victim while the perpetrator venomously purges the boundaries poured out for them. I never knew the word “No” would release me from a prison I was unaware of living in. “No” was a chisel used to chip away the mortar and loosen the stones of a wall holding me captive in a kingdom where the Ruler sits high on a pedestal ordering the peasants to bow down and beg for mercy. In a family of narcissists, “No” is a key to the shackles bounding the heart. I never knew the word “No” would open a fiery hell to be crawled through in order to reach the spring of freedom. And although the spring is refreshing, it’s gurgling waters plays a sad tune to be embedded on the soul. I never knew the word “No” would bring about such monumental changes that I would no longer recognize the reflection of the face looking back at me. It’s the face of a child who’s grown up before her time… and for the first time in her life, she wears a genuine smile. A victorious smile. Because she knows her life is enslaved to “No” one.
