No, I will never forget where I was born and where I lived for 7 years; but, I will never forget feeling like I didnt belong there. The homophobic songs and the million and one homophobic slurs Ive heard over the years are scars engraved in my brain permanently. Im sorry, but there is no way I can call a place where hate is culturally acceptable my home. The police is corrupt, the government is corrupt, and the people are irrational. There really is no one love in Jamaica, just hateful people who make it there lifes work to make whoever is different feel unwelcome and out of place. I really miss my island, the beautiful weather, and the amazing food; but jackfruit and Jucci Patties arent worth my life and my liberty. The last time I was there I felt uncomfortable the entire trip. Not only did my cousin say, We kill gays in Jamaica like its completely normal, I also didnt see Dr Pepper in any store. I cant live in a country so hateful and uncivilized; and I certainly cant live in a country without Dr Pepper. I love living in a country where hate, in most cases, Is frowned upon. I love being able to choose between a plethora of soda options. I love not singing an anthem every morning in a courtyard with people dressed exactly like me. It doesnt matter to me where my umbilical cord was cut, I consider myself an American. At least in this country Im treated as a human being with basic rights. I choose liberty, not death. youtu.be/XaHSKJReCXE
