No Kill Huntsville In the wake of our public workshop about - TopicsExpress

No Kill Huntsville In the wake of our public workshop about becoming a No Kill Community, it has been suggested by some that rescuers in our community should be doing more. We disagree. It is our position that the rescue community is doing all it can and likely has had too much burden placed on limited resources. The No Kill Equation is eleven very distinct elements; it is not all of the elements rolled into one called "rescue." In a balanced No Kill Community, rescue groups serve a key role as they pull animals from the open admission shelter, but they are not relied upon to be the entire answer. To do so does not get to the heart of keeping animals out of the shelter in the first place or getting them out quickly using a variety of resources. For those of you in our rescue community, please know that we recognize your efforts. We are rescuers ourselves. We have been in rescue for decades. We know that most people in rescue work full-time jobs and expend vast amounts of time and personal resources to help animals. An ongoing joke is that no one in rescue owns an ironing board. Who has time to iron? Or read a book? Or go out to dinner? If you will take the time to learn about what we hope to accomplish, you can help us achieve the balance we need to bring no kill programs here. We encourage you to start with this page on our web site and then venture out from there. We have been quite transparent in putting our belief system into print, as well as being clear about what we hope to achieve. In a perfect world, you will still rescue animals. But we need more balance as this becomes a community effort where you are not expected row our no kill boat alone while we all sit there and watch.
