No More Hotel Traffic Jams “Our new vacuum cleaners don’t choke or chew things up, so we get our jobs done faster and with less hassle,” says Pam Payne, executive housekeeper for the Clarion Barceló Hotel, Chicago, IL. The new vacuum cleaner Payne is referring to is the CV 30 from Tornado® Industries. The CV 30 has an automatic clutch that instantly disengages the brush roller so that items such as socks, towels, and coins don’t jam the machine. Once the roller has been disengaged, all the housekeeper must do is turn the machine off, remove the obstruction—made easy with the CV 30’s “no-tools-required” bottom plate removal—and turn the machine back on. The brush roller and the housekeeper are back at work. “This is a real problem solver for us,” says Payne. “It’s not uncommon to vacuum under beds and chairs only to have the machine choke on something—resulting in downtime for the vacuum cleaner and lost time for the housekeeper.” Payne adds that housekeepers then must call a hotel maintenance person to take the machine apart and remove the obstruction. Sometimes they must send the vacuum cleaner to the repair shop, but either way, the housekeepers lose valuable time. At the Clarion, as at most hotels, the housekeepers must clean 16 to 18 rooms per day. To facilitate this, the hotel has developed a systematic approach to guest room cleaning. The cleaning worker knows what to do and when to do it, completing the job thoroughly and quickly. “Tornado’s vacuum cleaner helps us stick to our tight schedule,” says Payne. “A jammed machine is just like a traffic jam for us; we want to get out of or around it as quickly as possible. The CV 30 helps us do this.”
