No Need to Fake it Tempeh Bacon This is delicious for breakfast, or as part of a sandwich (TLT, anyone)? or crumbled on a salad. You just have to remember to marinate the tempeh for a while to let the flavors really get into the tempeh. Cheers! Ingredients 1 8 oz package tempeh ½ cup water 2 tablespoons maple syrup or brown rice syrup ¼ teaspoon liquid smoke 2 tablespoons soy sauce, or GF tamari, or Braggs Liquid Aminos or raw coconut aminos A dash of cumin A dash of cayenne (optional) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar ½ teaspoon black pepper Enough oil to sauté A stamp size piece of Kombu (a sea vegetable) Let’s sizzle: Place the tempeh and Kombu in a pot of boiling water just enough to cover the tempeh. Let it simmer uncovered for about 12 minutes. Remove from the pan and let it cool. While the tempeh cools, place the water, syrup, liquid smoke, soy sauce and spices in a shallow dish. This is your marinade. Slice the tempeh lengthwise in long very thin pieces about ¼” thick. Carefully place the slices in the marinade. Let it sit for about an hour or even up to overnight. Spray a bit of oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Let it cook for a couple of minutes on each side until it is crispy and golden. TLT Sandwich: Toast up your favorite sliced bread, slather with a vegan mayo of choice, add sliced tomatoes, lettuce, the fab tempeh bacon that you just whipped up, and maybe a couple slices avocado. Love this.
