No Sir, I will never burgle Mr Henrys property, said Charles Blackman to Inspector Wright, he was very kind to me! In 1887, Charles Blackman a Barbadian and a notorious thief, was released from the Mazaruni penal settlement. A string of burglaries soon followed but no one could be caught though the police suspected who it might be. Like Dick Turpin, it was possible the police could bribe his woman and hopefully catch him red handed. His woman was a Hester Nightingale who was paid a sum of money and was to inform the police when he was about to commit an act. And so one night Inspector Wright and a police detective waited patiently at Hesters, from 1oclock in the morning....
