No-brainer really - mayors of communities like ours, representing the views of their respective citizens, sharing common concerns about the hasty process & unsubstantiated basis of the Local Govt Commissions Draft Proposals. Lawrence Yule appears to be speaking from 2 sides of his mouth - as Mayor of Hastings hes pro-Proposal (amalgamate all 5 Councils into one HB Council), yet as President of Local Govt NZ, hes surely heard plenty of vocal dissent, right from the get-go, so he cant say it hasnt been voiced at that level, just perhaps not in writing too often (or should that be often enough, squeaky wheel). I dont believe this meeting was secret, or it wouldnt be out in the public domain at all, especially before it happened. I believe it was convened by & for these leaders to do just that - lead, through that shared purpose of upholding the democratic principle of keeping the LOCAL in Local Govt.
