No elected officials from either side of the bridge attended todays celebration. A clear message was sent that we will no longer be abused by continuous fare and toll hikes or neglected when it comes to transit options and investment in infrastructure. I have no delusion that the broken bureaucratic structure of the MTA will change overnight, but steps must be taken to stop the unsustainable debt and the gross mismanagement of mega projects like the East Side Access Tunnel, which is outrageously and unjustifiably 14 years over schedule and $6 billion over budget. It is this type of dysfunction that has led this agency to become the 5th most indebted municipal entity (after three states and NYC) in the United States of America with a debt burden of $40 billion. Today, we collectively said the people of Brooklyn and Staten Island have had enough!
