No evidence of malignancy is seen. Hallelujah! :) Its been a rough couple of months and a painful week+. Most dont know but I underwent a partial thyroidectomy last Wednesday to remove half of my thyroid gland. This came about because there were 2 nodules there which unfortunately could not be confirmed (earlier) to be benign. A couple of months back, I discovered a lump at the base of my throat. There was no pain whatsoever but it just felt odd. I went for an ultrasound which was followed by a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) biopsy (an uncomfortable procedure!) to determine what the lump was. The pathologists diagnosis was that the contents were uncertain/suspicious, i.e. not malignant but not benign either (yes, scary!). This promptly led to a decision that I undergo a partial thyroidectomy to address the concern. During the procedure (which requires GA), the surgeons would remove half of my thyroid and have the pathologist run a frozen biopsy. If the results were nasty, they would remove my entire thyroid. This would mean being on lifelong medication but clearly, there would be bigger concerns then. Fortunately, the surgery went smoothly. The doctors were able to do the necessary and concluded (after running a full biopsy) that the nodules/growths were not malignant. They were also able to keep the other half of my thyroid intact which meant that I can do without medication and lead a normal life (I didnt realise that half of ones thyroid produces sufficient thyroid hormones for the body). I spent 2 nights in hospital with tubes sticking out of my throat - not pleasant. (I have photos for the depraved if youre keen.) I wasnt sure if I wanted to share this story but I figured that the power of Gods love and the incredible support from my family should not go unmentioned. Through close friends, I was referred to Dr. Andrew Loy from MEMC who is an awesome ENT surgeon (I highly recommend him if you have any ENT-type concerns). Karen & Joshua were with me throughout the ordeal, and I benefited from the prayers and kind thoughts of many (you know who you are!). But most of all, I believe that God was and continues to be there for me. His blessing and unconditional love helped me through this difficult period, and He continues to watch over all of us. Whats next? The stitches from the surgery were removed yesterday. My voice has returned to normal (mostly, but now I have an excuse for when I miss all the notes at karaoke). The wound will take time to heal. Ill be back in the office next week, and Ill be back to running & golf in about 3-4 weeks. But best of all, my faith in God is strengthened :) Hallelujah!
