No fare increase in second quarter of 2014 for now Express Rail - TopicsExpress

No fare increase in second quarter of 2014 for now Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB) has no knowledge of fare hike speculation for its KLIA Express and KLIA transit services next year according to a statement by the company. As of now, Express Rail Link (ERL) is not aware of any fare increase starting from the second quarter of 2014, said ERL in a brief statement to Cars, Bikes & Trucks. ERLSB was responding to CBT news report two days ago about the rumour in the transport sector that the airport transfer into the city centre would undergo fare restructuring exercise for its KLIA Express and transit service from Kuala Lumpur to the airport with three intermediate stations next year. CBT sources had opined that due to high operational costs and maintenance expenditure over the years, ERL was mulling to conduct a fare review soon. An industry insider had said the lengthy delay of the new low-cost airport completion for the past 30 months has provided an ‘extra weight’ on ERLSB’s financial outlook and heightened the need to increase the ERL fares soon. “KLIA2 is scheduled to be operational by May next year after several delays over the past few years. The cost in building the land public transport hub for the new airport or gateway@KLIA2 has increased and it has affected indirectly towards ERLSB projected revenue,” said the source. The last fare revision was in October last year with a 14 per cent increase prior to its fare adjustment in June 2008. The fare increase last year was for the heavily-discounted monthly and weekly cards for its transit service. At present, ERL offers the KLIA Express service from city centre directly into the international airport in 28 minutes and KLIA Transit with three intermediate stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Cyberjaya/Putrajaya and Salak Tinggi.
