No going back on October 5 date for LG polls – Gov Obi on September 02, 2013 / in News By VINCENT UJUMADU AWKA — GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State has insisted there was no going back on the October 5, 2013, date for conduct of the local government election in the state. There had been arguments in some quarters concerning the possibility of the council election, in view of its closeness to the November 16 date for the governorship poll. But speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day training course organised for Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, in Awka, Governor Obi said his administration was determined to entrench democracy at the grass root before the end of his tenure. The governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mrs. Azuka Enemuo, regretted that local government election had eluded the state for a long time. Recalling that efforts to conduct the election since he assumed office in 2006 had been marred by series of litigations. He expressed optimism that with the calibre of people in ANSIEC and the efforts being made by them, the state would witness free, fair and credible elections this year. He charged the electoral umpire to provide a level -playing ground for all political parties participating in the election to ensure true participatory democracy. The acting chairman of ANSIEC, Mr. Sylvester Okonkwo, stressed the need for free; fair, credible and transparent elections in a democratic setting, assuring that the commission would not disappoint the people of the state. He commended Governor Obi for what he described as his unprecedented support to the commission and admonished Anambra people to imbibe the spirit of peace and unity and avoid all forms of violence.
