No matter how much the Tea Party Republicans want to spin the - TopicsExpress

No matter how much the Tea Party Republicans want to spin the issue, the fact is they are solely responsible for the government shutdown. The Affordable Care Act was passed by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by the President. What is happening now is that the Tea Party is trying to win through extortion what they could not win through legislation. 43 times Republicans passed a bill trying to overturn the ACA and 43 times it was defeated in the Senate. The primary issue in the 2012 Presidential election between Obama and Romney was the ACA and Obama won comfortably. Which brings us to where we are now. The Tea Party believes that the federal government is too powerful and wishes to return us to a government more like the failed Articles of Confederation or the Confederate States of America. If the Republican controlled House can force the Democrats to surrender to voting on funding only parts of the government at a time, they can effectively pick and choose how they want government to function which is why the Democratically controlled Senate cannot buckle for the sake of our Constitutional government. If the Tea Party’s tactic is successful it will establish a precedent where the majority rule of the legislative process will effectively be thwarted. Imagine if the Democrats did the same thing over immigration reform. Suppose the Democrats in the Senate demanded that Republicans raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour or else they would not pass the budget. No one believes they would ever pass it. If a party in control of either house of Congress decides that they want to stop government all they have to do is adopt this Tea Party tactic and the United States will quickly drop from being the leading power in the world to a large scale replica of the Balkans unable to provide even the most basic of service to our people.
