No new rebel group in north, police say. Police have dismissed rumours of a new rebel group, God’s Resistance Army, recruiting fighters in the north. Gulu- Police have dismissed reports that there is a new rebel group that has established its base in northern Uganda. There are ongoing talks that there is a new rebel group, the God’s Resistance Army, that is recruiting fighters in Acholi sub-region (Kitgum District) and Lango sub-region (Lira District). However, northern region police commander Simon Peter Wafana said the claims were not true. The talks come at a time when the two regions are experiencing a wave of armed robberies in which 11 motorcycles have been stolen and four boda boda cyclists injured. Kitgum Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Santo Okot Lapola called for calm among residents, assuring them of peace and security. He added that security agencies would ensure that those engaged in armed robberies would be arrested and prosecuted. Lira RDC George Odongo threatened to arrest anybody who claimed that there were rebel recruitment taking place. “The ongoing talks on rebel recruitment in Lango are causing tension and anxiety among the population, which might also affect development,” Mr Odongo said.
