No one extreme has a monopoly on this brand of totalitarianism. On this point, the right and left seem to merge in this shadowy area on the dark side of the political sphere. They wrap all the way around the other end until you can’t tell one from another. They just took different routes to get there; and their numbers seem to be growing. Think of the scandals we’ve endured lately involving someone saying something offensive. “It’s now very common to hear people say, ‘I’m rather offended by that.’ As if that gives them certain rights,” said actor and author Stephen Fry at The Hay Festival of Literature & Arts in Wales May 28, 2005. “It’s no more than a whine. ‘I find that offensive.’ It has no meaning. It has no purpose. It has no reason to be respected as a phrase. ‘I’m offended by that.’ Well, so … what?”
