No one idea, organization or sector can be a magic solution to the roya crisis, not to mention the bigger question of how immigration is brought about by poverty and instability in the countryside. But unless we begin to act today on all the factors affecting migration, we will not curb the increasingly desperate situation of migrants from the rural lands of Central American countries. Although it’s hurting today, the coffee economy – and the caffeine in your morning cup – represents one of the region’s best opportunities to restore jobs and enable small business and entrepreneurship to power growth and development. Investing in rural enterprise and finding ways to mitigate roya will not unilaterally stop climate change, violence or immigration, but it may begin to turn the tide and offer important hope and opportunity to younger generations.
