No one who knew Jane* (name changed to protect confidentiality) and her husband would have guessed their relationship was abusive. He had a successful career and was well-known and well-liked in their community. Only a few close friends and family suspected the abuse that lasted most of their 28-year marriage. Behind closed doors, however, he was physically and emotionally abusive to both Jane and their children. She even had to be hospitalized because he had injured her so severely. She believed that the emotional abuse was worse, however, because it did not heal in weeks or even months. Since finding a refuge at Golden House, Jane has found a new apartment to keep her children safe and is working to prosecute her husband for the first time. She continues to come to Golden House for support from the advocates as well as support group. Although she knows there is a great deal of healing ahead, she is thankful to be where she is now. She said, Looking back, I cant believe I stayed married for so long, but I felt I had to be there to protect our children. I never thought I would be where I am now.
