No one would suggest that we were asking too much of someone if they did not allow their toddler to run around a pool unattended, until they were old enough and with enough skill to be safe. But many of our dogs are expected to be able to cope with situations, events, and objects that they never were given the skills to cope with easily, or were even given the opportunity to experience until they were past developmental stages during which it would have been easier for them to learn to do so. Many of these dogs were not designed from womb onward to be pets in the world we put them in. We have our work cut out for us, thats for sure.
