Print Friendly and PDF 0 0 11 In that June 14 attack, nine people were burnt alive, while another person was allegedly killed in police firing. In connection with these killings, a murder case (case 32) was filed by the Police at Pallabi Police Station, accusing thousands of anonymous people in June. Biharis however claim that they have been made accused in most of the cases filed over the incident. When OC of Pallabi Police station Syed Ziuzzaman was contacted, he said, So far six cases have been filed over the incident. Three cases were filed over the Kalshi Bihari camp clash and three others over the incidents in Mirpur-11 and Paris road. It was a clash between two factions of Bihari community. Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police is looking into the cases. They have all the case documents. Investigation Officer of the case DB Inspector Nibaran Chandra Barman said police received mobile phone images and video footages of that incident but could not verify the identities of the culprits. The case number 32 Im dealing with right now is about the killing of 10 people in the Kalshi camp clash. It mentioned unidentified reasons for the clash and accused thousands of anonymous people. The clash took place between Kurmitola Camp and New Kurmitola Camp dwellers, Barman said. The inspector said the case had been filed by SI Mominur Rahman of Pallabi Police station under Penal Codes sections 143, 148, 326, 436, 302, 114 and 34. So far, weve received lots of footages and pictures captured on mobile phones. Ive already taken testimony of Aslam, Yasin and Farjana. Not a single culprit seen on the footages could be identified. Weve made no arrest till date, he added. When asked how long it would take to wrap up the investigation, he said he could not say with certitude when it would be over. Yasin, who lost nine members of his family in that attack, said no police had talked to him about the murder case. bdnews24 also came to learn that the supervising officer of the cases Assistant Commissioner (AC) Towheedul Islam has just been granted a year-long study leave. He declined to make any comment on the cases. AC Mahbubur Rahman is now looking into the cases. He is yet to start his new task. Bihari community leaders and elders claimed police were partly responsible for the attack, but much to their chagrin many members of the community were made accused in the three cases. Fear is still palpable amongst the Biharis in Kalshi camp. Some members of the community are on the run, others are still struggling to recuperate their losses. One leader of the community, however, has indicated that a victim Yasin, who lost most of his family members in the attack, is going to file a case over the incident as soon as his only surviving daughter Farjana recovers from burn injuries. Kurmitola camp branch secretary of Stranded Pakistanis General Repatriation Committee (SPGRC) Md Shawkat Hossain said, A pall of fear has been looming over the camp since it was attacked. We have not filed any case yet over the incident. But cases were filed against us. President of Urdu Speaking Peoples Youth Rehabilitation Movement Md Sadakat Khan also told bdnews24 that the community had not filed any case. He also said that he was not aware of the murder case (case 32) filed by the Police. He said, As far as I know, we did not file any case over this incident. But many cases were filed against us. Ive so far heard of three cases. Police (case 31) and two other persons — Mobarak Hossain (case 29) and Omar Faruk (case 30) — filed three cases against us at Pallabi Police Station. The cases were filed under Special Powers Acts clause 15 on charges of sabotage. Interestingly, all the three cases were filed on June 14. Case number 29 and case number 30 have similar drafts. Most of the accused in the cases are Biharis. The community as a whole did not file any case because we are too frightened. We are at loggerheads with the police. The worst victim Yasin is waiting for his daughter to recover to file a case. On receiving compensation for their losses, he said, On the day the district administration handed over nine bodies to us at DMCH, we got Tk20,000 for each body as funeral cost. Since then, we have not received any compensation from any quarters. When asked whether any probe committee was formed over the incident, he said, A three-member probe committee headed by a joint commissioner was formed by the police. It recorded Yasin’s statement. But it is yet to submit the report. Sadakat Khan also stated that they had provided numerous pictures and video footages, captured on mobile phones, to police. bdnews24 also contacted Yasin. He claimed no police had taken his testimony over any murder case. Replying to a query on when he would file a case, Yasin said, I was too busy with my daughters treatment. Ive been waiting for her recovery. Ill talk to the SPGRC Chairman and then Ill file a case. On identifying the culprits, he said he could not identify them, but he believed many of the attackers hail from Bounia embankment area. It was reported that on June 14 a dispute over firecrackers had led to the attack that killed 10 people. Bihari community had, however, blamed MP Ilyas Uddin Mollah for the attack. DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed had told the journalists at a programme at Stamford University on August 16 that severe punishment would be meted out to the culprits if allegations against them were found true in the probe report.
