No pun intended, it seems that the importance of studying history has been gradually forgotten. Yet, as students of a Jesuit school and as teenagers who learn from reflection, studying history is definitely of paramount importance to us. Why? Greetings, my fellow Wahyanites, we are the history society, a student unit dedicated to promote the study of history within the campus. Today, we are going to unearth the hidden rewards through learning this subject. Let us start by defining history. Generally, it is perceived as a record of past events. However, it can also be said as a collection of valuable memories that serves as a series of lessons to the people. Understanding the past helps you appreciate the experiences of the ancestors, and the cultures of different ethnic groups. This broadens the horizons of those learning history, in turns forges a stronger bond among people in this planet, or even, bridges the divide of those factions that are in conflicts. Occupy Central is one. Studying this subject facilitates your ability to see from different perspectives, and accept views of different stakeholders related to the occupation in an easier manner. Reflect. This is what we are told to do under Jesuit education. You will get to reflect via learning history, but not by reflecting on yourselves. We reflect on the past. Reflection on yourselves helps to improve after sustaining mistakes, while reflection on the past has a small yet influential difference – it helps improvement without the need to experience mistakes. An ideal way to learn, isn’t it? This is the best especially for politicians, whose careers are less likely to accept mistakes. Our governor in the past, Chris Patten, who loves history, is one prominent example. In addition, history helps hone critical thinking and analytical skills. History is not purely based on facts. By dribs and drabs of information gathered, historians predict outcomes within certain unknown areas in the world of the past, and suggests possible reasons for the outcomes. Therefore historians usually envisage the unexpected, allowing better preparation for the future. Last but not least, people who study history tend to sharpen their arguing skills. Through developing and consolidating your stance in historical issues, you get to better your literacy skills, and gain creativity and persuasiveness . Learning history might not bring it to the apex, but we can omit the mistakes, rendering your skills from flawed to flawless. What comes next depends on your potential to do even better or not. Summing up the above points, we can see that history is beneficial to us all. However, we know that a brief explanation of history will not be enough to change your mind. Therefore, we, the history society, shall take up the responsibility, to present the fun side of history. We are planning to offer the following this year: History Forum War History Exhibition Biweekly Meet DSE History Taster Program Film Viewing Activity Museum and History Visit If you want to go deeper, the society will also provide a number of archives and books for further self-study. Drawing up the curtains, studying history is meaningful and conducive to one’s life in multiple aspects, and the society provides wonderful tools and aids for you to adapt the study of history.
