No room at the Inn! Last week, the winged population count at our barn went from 74 to 501 in a single day as 7 chickens, 357 quail, 19 chukar partridge, 2 pigeons, 1 parrot and 21 pheasants relocated from a home in Springfield to Nevins Farm. The birds were ordered removed from the home by Springfield’s city code enforcement office. All of the birds have now been tested by the State Department of Agriculture and homes are being sought for them while we await test results, which are expected in later this week. Some of the birds display symptoms of their crowded living environment, but most appear to be in good condition and will be excellent candidates for adoption. While we are happy to offer a safe landing place for these guys, caring for several times the number of birds that we can typically house and feed is a tremendous strain on our resources – both human and financial – and we could use some help finding great new adopters as well as help with some supplies. We are specifically in need of pine shavings, game bird crumble and gift certificates to Dodge Grain (so we can pick out a couple other feeders and waterers that we think would work best for them). Please share the news of our feathered bounty far and wide!
