No sector will be spared labor inspection The Public Security department will deploy officers in the streets, squares, shopping malls and markets across the Kingdom to check for illegal expatriate workers after Nov. 3, according to a top official. Maj. Gen. Jamaan Al-Ghamdi, assistant director of security affairs, said officers are empowered to arrest violators and refer them to the prison and passport departments. He said the department had prepared extensively for the inspections. This additional responsibility would not affect its core police work. He urged expatriates to use the last few days of the amnesty to rectify their status and warned citizens they would be punished for harboring or protecting violators. Meanwhile, the Passport Department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, has processed the paperwork of more than 4 million illegal workers over the past six months, according to Faisal Al-Otaibi, director general of the ministry’s inspection section. Al-Otaibi said about 1 million violators were deported. He said violators face fines of up to SR100,000, two years in prison, or both. He said the ministry would conduct inspections while the Ministry of Interior would arrest offenders. Al-Otaibi said there would be no exceptions with inspections of all sectors including construction, maintenance, wholesale and retail, hotels and tourism facilities, food services and commercial markets.
