No social reformation in India happened with the approval of the society at large. At every stage, reformers had to fight society and the notions of culture to bring more equality. If the perception of morality of the majority were allowed to prevail, then it is obvious that widows would still get burned on the pyres of their husbands or be treated like inferior being and untouchability would still be openly practiced.
